The context: At the house of his aunt and uncle in Barcelona, David takes a quick nap before lunch. His cousin María calls to wake him up.

- beber - to drink
- él bebe - he drinks
- él zumo de naranja - the orange juice (zumo = used in Spain)
- en la cocina - in the kitchen
- la prima - the cousin (f)
- enseñar - to show
- ella le enseña - she shows (to) him
- la habitación - it's nice of you (familiar)
- él está cansado - he's tired
- dormir - to sleep
- él duerme - he sleeps
- despertar - to wake (sb) up
- ella le* despierta - she wakes him up
- a las dos en punto - at two on the dot
- llamar - to call
- ella le* llama - she calls him
- ¡despierta! - wake up! (imperative, familiar)
- es la hora del almuerzo - it's lunch time
Note that on two occasions (*), the female speaker uses the indirect pronoun object "le", instead of the direct masculine pronoun "lo".
This use of "le" (called "léismo") is a "dialectal variation in the Spanish language that occurs largely in Spain.
It involves using the indirect object pronoun 'le' in place of the (standard) masculine direct object pronoun 'lo', especially when the direct object refers to a male person." (Wikepedia)
Don't worry about this form, just be aware of it. You'll hear it when you travel to Spain .

Say the words and phrases OUT LOUD after the native speaker. It will help improve your pronunciation and your listening skills.
Note that in Italian, the words for "I, you, he, she" etc. are often dropped, unless they are needed for clarity or emphasis. In our mini-story, the context will tell you if "gli mostra" means "she shows him" or "he shows him."
After you've practiced and recalled the individual words, you'll hear the mini-story again.
Listen and say the sentences along with the speaker. Try not to translate!

To better remember words and phrases, review them visually, or even write them out on a sheet of paper or on small index cards.
But most importantly, always say the Italian OUT LOUD, several times if you can.

With this game you can learn and review 8 greetings and common phrases. Even if you learn no other German, these polite phrases are essential for any visit to a German-speaking country.
When you use these German words and expressions, you show you're willing to get out of your own language shell. And, often they are great conversation openers with locals.
Note the meanings of "bitte" and "wie bitte?" The word "bitte" also has a number of other meanings not listed here. Context is important.
