Spanish Language Game "¿Tienes fotos?" (Do you have photos?) 
Learn and practice 15 Spanish words and phrases in the context of a mini-story.
The context: During dinner with his aunt and uncle in Barcelona, David asks if they have family photos.
This short episode also comes up in our Spanish 1 course, which consists of a series of brief stories.

Spanish Language Game "A las dos en punto" (At two on the dot). 
Play this interactive game to learn and practice 18 Spanish words and phrases as part of a mini-story. 
For 4 of the verbs, you'll learn both the infinitive and the 3rd person form.
The context: At the house of his aunt and uncle in Barcelona, David takes a quick nap before lunch. His cousin María calls to wake him up.

  • él bebe - he drinks
  • él zumo de naranja - the orange juice (zumo = used in Spain)
  • en la cocina - in the kitchen
  • la prima - the cousin (f)
  • enseñar - to show
  • ella le enseña - she shows (to) him
  • la habitación - it's nice of you (familiar)
  • él está cansado - he's tired
  • dormir - to sleep
  • él duerme - he sleeps
  • despertar - to wake (sb) up
  • ella le* despierta - she wakes him up
  • a las dos en punto - at two on the dot
  • llamar - to call
  • ella le* llama - she calls him
  • ¡despierta! - wake up! (imperative, familiar)
  • es la hora del almuerzo - it's lunch time 

Note that on two occasions (*), the female speaker uses the indirect pronoun object "le", instead of the direct masculine pronoun "lo".
This use of "le" (called "léismo") is a "dialectal variation in the Spanish language that occurs largely in Spain.
It involves using the indirect object pronoun 'le' in place of the (standard) masculine direct object pronoun 'lo', especially when the direct object refers to a male person." (Wikepedia)
Don't worry about this form, just be aware of it. You'll hear it when you travel to Spain .

Spanish Language Story Game: 2



Spanish Language Story: Part 2 of David's trip to Spain (El viaje de David 2 - En Barcelona).
Level: Elementary (A2).
Playing Time: 6 minutes (The Story and Word Shoot Game)

David is at his aunt and uncle's place in Barcelona. After he's had something to drink and taken a quick nap, he asks his uncle if he could show him some old family photos. The next days, David's cousin María shows him around the city. They go to see La Sagrada Familia, a magnificent church built by the architect Antonio Gaudí. On another day, they go shopping on the famous Paseo de Gracia. Afterwards, they go to a café (una cafetería) and have something to drink: una horchata (a drink made from tigernuts) and un cortado (an espresso with milk).

Hear and read Part 2 of David's trip in Spanish. It contains 130 basic words and phrases, all in context.
Play the story several times and try to listen without translating the words. 
Say each sentence aloud after (or along with) the native speaker.

David flies from Boston to Barcelona. On the plane, he chats in Spanish with the woman sitting next to him. At the Barcelona airport he gets picked up by his aunt Carmen, who lives in Barcelona.

Hear and read Part 1 of David's trip in Spanish. It contains 120 basic words and phrases, all in context.
Play the story as often as you like. Try to understand as much as you can without translating.
To hear a sentence again, click on it (before continuing to the next screen).
To practice your pronunciation, repeat each sentence aloud, just after or right along with the speaker.
Note: in context, words for "he, she, we" etc are often omitted in Spanish unless they are needed for clarity.

The two starred words (*) are forms of the Spanish conditional:
1.  te gustaría - you would like (3rd p. conditional of "gustar", to like)
2. estaría - it would be (3rd p. conditional of "estar", to be)
Don't worry about these forms, just be aware of them. As you progress in Spanish, you'll become familiar with this grammar pattern and begin to recognize it when you see or hear it.
